Video jumps & product links are below if you only want to see certain parts. I'm introducing our tag for the 5th annual #watercolorsummer2025, running from June - August. Use water-based mediums on any page and you can use the hashtag, even water-based markers. If it's water-activated or a water-based marker, it counts! Also covering some basic tips and tricks I've learned using water in coloring books. Then starting a page in Dark Fairytales with a watercolor bas, using (in real-time) watercolor pencils and Derwent Inktense and activating them with a water brush and a water-based colorless blender. While I like using these 2 sets of pencils, as I note below, they are currently way overpriced IMO. You could swap out other brands of watercolor pencils or water-based mediums and still get great results, though some may require more water, more layers, etc. Some tips noted: Use as little water as possible on thin paper as it's fragile or double-sided books to avoid bleed-through (water brushes or water-based blenders are good options) Let the page dry throughly before adding other mediums or layers of water. You can use a heat gun, but I usually just give it 24 hours. To get more blending & watercolor movement on the page and minimize bleed through, you can use a treatment like clear gesso or satin glazing liquid before starting. It will make the page act more like watercolor paper. However, it creates lots of texture which can be frustrating with colored pencils on top. Always try a test in a new book to check for bleed-through, even if you have other books from that artist, as paper quality has been changing over time and you may see different results. 00:00 #watercolorsummer2025 06:10 Watercolor tips 15:15 Watercolor pencils & activation 35:27 Derwent inktense pencils & activation 1:10:45 Wrap up & next week's channel plans Sky Supracolor Gray, Steel Gray, Light Gray Trees Inktense Fern, Leaf Green, Ionian Green, Olivine Willow, Madder Brown, Charcoal Gray Dark Fairytales (Kerby Rosanes) - https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Fairy-Tal... Supplies used (and my thoughts below on prices) Caran D'ache Supracolor Watercolor Pencils - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Carandache... Definitely take advantage of open stock at places like Blick and keep an eye out for sales - another option would be the Distress Watercolor Pencils (https://www.amazon.com/Ranger-Ink-Bun... a 72 set, but also provides a smooth finish when activated with water. Also Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer (https://www.amazon.com/Albrecht-Durer...) Derwent Inktense - https://www.amazon.com/Derwent-Colore... Open stock & sets (Blick): https://www.dickblick.com/products/de... Unfortunately again way overpriced IMO. I paid $100 for the 72 set and felt that was a good deal. Definitely take advantage of open stock at places like Blick and keep an eye out for sales. I don't know what would be a good alternative for these since they are ink-based, but feel free to comment below if you have a recommendation.
