£300 Turntable vs. £3000 Turntable - Rega RP1 vs Technics SL-1200G

Here's the latest comparison - a Rega RP1 in completely unmodified form with it's RB101 arm and Carbon cartridge up against a completely standard Technics SL-1200G. For consistency, the Carbon cartridge was moved from the Rega to the Technics, and the exact same phono stage (a Graham Slee Accession) and digital recorder (Tascam DA-3000) with the exact same recording level. The tune is The Gold Bug taken from an original 1980 cope of The Turn Of A Friendly Card by The Alan Parsons Project. I've played the tune through twice - there are some speed inconsistencies between the decks - the Technics is rock steady whereas the Rega varies a little so cutting them together to compare took a bit of work. On the second play through you can hear how the speed varies between the two decks as the track progresses. Overall though, the Rega puts up a very good battle against the Technics. I was surprised!
