AFGHANISTAN, SAFETY A MATTER FOR LOCAL FORCES

From 18th June 2013, Afghan forces have officially taken control of security across their country. The handover of responsibility marks a significant milestone in the nearly 12-year war and marks a turning point for American and NATO military forces, which will now move entirely into a supporting role. On the ground, this means Italians and other foreign combat troops will not be directly carrying the fight to the insurgency, but will advise and back up as needed with air support and medical evacuations. Doubts remain, however, over the ability of the 350,000-strong Afghan forces to thwart the Taliban. Recent attacks have demonstrated the Taliban's ability to strike at Kabul and other important cities as the country prepares for next year's presidential elections and the NATO withdrawal by the end of 2014.
