Spinalonga (Greek: Σπιναλόγκα) is an island located in the Gulf of Elounda, north-eastern Crete. It lies within the municipality of Agios Nikolaos, Lasithi, near the town of Plaka in the area of Kalydon. The island has a fascinating history: during Venetian rule, it served as a fortress, but later became a leper colony. The name "Spinalonga" likely originated from the Greek expression "stin Elounda," meaning "to Elounda," which the Venetians adapted into their own language as "spina" (thorn) and "longa" (long). The island's strategic position led to its fortification, making it an impregnable sea fortress during Venetian rule. Today, visitors can explore its ruins and learn about its tragic past.
