The 17th-century Mughal bridge near Jalandhar, situated in Jahangir village (near Nakodar), is a historic structure constructed over the Chitti Bein stream. Likely built during Emperor Jahangir’s reign, this bridge served as a vital, high-capacity link on the old Delhi-Lahore Mughal Highway, showcasing classic Mughal architecture. Key Historical Details Location: The bridge is located in Jahangir village, about 12 km from Nakodar on the Nakodar-Kala Sanghian Road in the Jalandhar district, Punjab. Era and Purpose: Built around the 17th century (likely Jahangir or Shah Jahan's reign), it served as part of the Mughal route connecting Delhi to Lahore. Architecture: It features traditional arched masonry. While it has survived for over 350 years, it is currently in a ruined or non-functional state. Significance: It is located near the Dakhni Sarai, a 17th-century, 1640 CE resthouse (sarai) built for travelers, showcasing the strategic importance of this route. Connection to Modernity: The old road network it served was diverted by the British to the current Grand Trunk (GT) Road. This bridge, along with another near Sultanpur Lodhi, represents the remaining, though largely abandoned, Mughal-era engineering in the Doaba region.
