With his move to the capital, and amongst dreams of owning a fixy bike, we have seen a change in his fashion attire, he now sports a crown fitting wooly hat reminiscent of a northern 'where's wally'. Some things never change though, and Tom's penchant for raw sounding, sub heavy house music stands rock-solid. After release on imprints like Morris Audio and Liebe Detail, Demac has earned himself a reputation as something of a crafty craftsmen -- his house sounds operate in a freaky little pocket all their own and seemed carved as if with different tools. This EP is no exception. Kicking off with the rubberised hop and skip of "Jackapella Bowles," taught analogue bass notes ping out a pattern around which non-standard claps, hiccupping sounds and some subtly used vocal samples all coalesce. "Dirty Honey" is just as fresh sounding, with double kicks and this time eerie bass notes jostling about like mischievous loiterers until a recognisable "hey, today, baby I got your money" vocal ups the ante yet further. Playful, poppy but propulsive, these are exactly the sort of super fresh house sounds you'd expect from left of centre Hypercolour. On the flip you'll find the wavy, soupy tech grooves of "Trying is right by me" which wallows in a quiet backroom as the party around it (weird synths, weird voices and filtered robots) grows louder and louder. As is often his want, Sheonda strips the same track back to a solid, locked-in and heads down groove of the sort he's nailed on recent release for Hypercolour and Fear of Flying. The shady male vocal remains, closing out a delightfully off kilter house package that isn't weird for weird's sake, but certainly operates in a modern sphere, a world away from the usual tired house tropes.
