In the early 1800s, a young girl named Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) prays for a companion and forges a psychic link with a powerful being known as the Nosferatu (Bill Skarsgård). In 1838, Ellen has married Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult). Thomas accepts a lucrative commission from his employer, Herr Knock (Simon McBurney), to sell the decrepit Grünewald Manor to the reclusive Count Orlok. Ellen relates her nightmares to him and pleads for Thomas to stay, but he gently dismisses her concerns. He leaves her in the care of his wealthy friend Friedrich Harding (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Locals warn Thomas not to visit Orlok and he witnesses them staking an alleged vampire. In the morning, with his horse gone, Thomas continues on foot until an unmanned carriage carries him to Orlok's castle. Orlok forces Thomas to complete the property sale and tricks him into signing a document dissolving his marriage to Ellen and takes his locket, containing a lock of her hair. Fearful of his unnatural abilites and bite marks, Thomas tries to escape, even attacking Orlok in his coffin. After being chased by Orlok and his hounds, Thomas falls into a river, escaping and healed by nuns, who tell him Orlok became a vampire by way of a deal with the devil. Orlok sets sail for Wisburg inside his coffin on a ship with plague-carrying rats, killing the crew during the voyage. During Thomas's absence, Ellen, under Orlok's influence, begins suffering from seizures and sleepwalking, which her doctor, Wilhelm Sievers (Ralph Ineson), struggles to treat. Sievers consults with his former mentor, Albin Eberhart von Franz (Willem Dafoe). After visiting Ellen, Von Franz confirms that she is indeed under the Nosferatu's influence. Sievers and von Franz search Knock's office, believing he serves the Nosferatu, who they discover is Orlok. Thomas returns to Wisburg as Orlok's plague ravages the populace. Knock escapes, killing a porter, and escorts Orlok to Grünewald Manor. Orlok appears to Ellen in her nightmares and informs her how Thomas annulled their marriage. He then demands that she submit to him in three days or he will kill everyone she loves, including Thomas. Harding kicks both Ellen and Thomas out. Thomas insists they leave the city for Ellen's safety, prompting her to disclose her past with Orlok. She then berates him for allowing Orlok to take advantage of him and annul their marriage. After goading him in a fit of demonic possession, they engage in troubled sex. Von Franz's research suggests that a fair maiden's willing sacrifice can destroy Nosferatu. Knowing that only she can stop the plague, Ellen conspires with von Franz to keep Thomas away. Thomas, von Franz, and Sievers go to Grünewald Manor, where they accidentally kill Knock after finding him sleeping in Orlok's coffin. Realizing von Franz's deception, Thomas rushes back to save Ellen as von Franz destroys the vault. Ellen summons Orlok to her bedroom and re-pledges herself to him, allowing him to feed on her until sunrise. Distracted by Ellen and unable to flee, Orlok is killed by the rising sunlight.
