Why Being Born as Magikarp SUCKS... You hatch from an egg somewhere in a river in the Kanto region. Congratulations, you're a Magikarp, one of the weakest Pokémon in existence. Around you, a cluster of siblings crack through their shells and tumble into the current, and the river immediately takes them. The water pulls you sideways too, so you thrash against it with your tail, which does almost nothing useful. Your only move is Splash, a move with no power, no effect, and no purpose beyond flapping around in the water, which is more or less what you're already doing anyway. A Pidgey drops from the bank above and snatches one of your siblings clean off the surface, so you thrash harder and push yourself toward the riverbed where the current is weaker. It works just enough to keep you from being swept away.
