Haithabu, also known as Hedeby, was a significant settlement of Danish Vikings and Swedish Varangians. It is considered an early medieval city in Northern Europe and served as a crucial trading hub and major center for long-distance trade between Scandinavia, Western Europe, the North Sea region, and the Baltic. It was founded around 770 and was finally destroyed by 1066 at the latest.
