Tools & Techniques for Pavement Evaluation and Design

This presentation will describe tools and techniques for evaluation of existing pavements and pavement rehabilitation design and will describe the use of a Digital Survey Vehicle for rapid collection of detailed pavement surface condition data and procedures to efficiently evaluate the data. Additionally, specialized testing including the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, Falling Weight Deflectometer, Ground Penetrating Radar and other unique testing equipment will be described. The intent of the presentation is to help highway designers understand the investigation tools available, the advantages and limitations of each technique and to provide guidance on when each technique is appropriate. The principles will be illustrated with examples from recent projects.
