Embroidering shoes is a great way to commemorate a special event, like a wedding/bridal shower or birthday. Or maybe you just want to level up and personalize your sneaker and impress everyone with your embroidery skills. Over the years of embroidering shoes and much trial and error, I’ve figured out the best tools and practices to make the job easier, so you don’t have to. Stitching on shoes can be somewhat challenging. Holding a cumbersome shoe while reaching into it and trying to pass needle and thread through multiple layers of material, repeatedly, for hours… it can be a lot. Don’t be discouraged! I got you! Bypass the headache and hassle of figuring it out on your own with these 7 helpful tips for embroidering shoes. Tip 1: Laces & Tongue- This may seem super obvious, but you’ll want to remove the shoe laces and tape the tongue of the shoe out of the way with painter’s tape or masking tape. If you’re worried about scuffing the toe or side rubber of the shoe, you can also cover those parts with painter’s tape to protect them. Tip 2: Strand Count - Embroidery floss is a 6-ply, divisible cotton thread. You can use as many or as few strands as you need to achieve your desired look. For shoes, I recommend using 1-3 strands because they are much easier to pull through the layers of material, much less bulky, and produce a nicer finished result. I offer several curated DMC thread palettes on my website. Available here: https://highcrafting.com/collections/... Tip 3: Thread Conditioner—When embroidering items that will be used, worn, or washed, I like to condition my embroidery thread with beeswax. Beeswax helps prevent knotting and protects your stitches from brittleness and fraying that can occur from wear and outdoor elements. Available here: https://highcrafting.com/products/pon... Tip 4: Clover Needles - There is only one brand of needles suitable for stitching on shoes (IMO): Clover Gold Eye Embroidery Needles. They are the very sharpest needles on the market and definitely make embroidering on shoes easier. Like a hot knife through buttah! I really can’t overstate what a difference there is between these needles and other brands ( like DMC or John James) in terms of sharpness and how much easier they make embroidering on shoes! This is THE #1 game-changing tool for me. If you follow only one of these tips, make it this one! Available here: https://highcrafting.com/products/clo... Tip 5: Smaller Needle - If you’re stitching with 1-3 strands of embroidery floss, you’ll need to use a smaller needle (like a size 7-9). Fewer strands = smaller needle = much easier to pass needle and thread through the shoe’s layers. Not sure what size a needle is? My Needle ID Cards help identify the size and type of your loose needles. Available here: https://highcrafting.com/products/nee... Tip 6: Needle Grippers - If you’re anything like me, you simply can’t function with a thimble on your finger. Rubber needle gripper help you get a good grasp to push or pull your needle through fabric with ease. I literally couldn’t stitch on shoes without them and that’s why they are my #2 game-changing too - not just for stitching on shoes but for stitching in general. They’re extremely handy! Available here: https://highcrafting.com/products/cop... Tip 7: Heat Erasable Pens - These pens were made for embroidery patterns! Not actually, but they might as well have been. They’re great for drawing your designs directly on the fabric. The ink disappears with heat. Be warned, though - the disappeared ink could possibly leave a tawny ghost mark and may also return in prolonged exposure to extreme cold temps. Available in lots of colors too!
