The event in 1975 marked the end of nearly 30 years of internal conflict and ushered in the end of the Vietnam war. The day was marked with confusion and fear as many tried to flee the city while US military forces left the country for good. This news report from the time shows how international media reported that momentous day, and includes two inaccuracies. In the chaos of the day, the 1975 report incorrectly described an American evacuation point as the roof of the US embassy when it was actually a nearby building housing US officials and their families. And where North Vietnamese force tanks were shown, they were also incorrectly described as being "abandoned" by the retreating South Vietnamese army.
