Here's how it works: Clutch Engagement: When the clutch pedal is released, a release bearing or hydraulic mechanism applies force on the pressure plate. The pressure plate moves towards the flywheel, exerting pressure on the friction plate. The friction plate gets sandwiched between the pressure plate and the flywheel. Friction Generation: The pressure applied on the friction plate creates friction between the friction plate and the flywheel. This friction allows the power from the engine to be transmitted to the transmission system, enabling the vehicle to move. Clutch Disengagement: When the clutch pedal is depressed, the release mechanism disengages the pressure on the pressure plate. This action releases the pressure on the friction plate, causing it to separate from the flywheel. As a result, power transmission from the engine to the transmission is interrupted, and the vehicle comes to a stop or changes gears. The single plate clutch is commonly used in passenger cars and other light-duty vehicles. It offers a compact design, ease of use, and smooth engagement. Multi Plate Clutch Working: A multi-plate clutch, as the name suggests, uses multiple interleaved friction discs or plates to transmit power. It is often found in high-performance vehicles and heavy-duty applications. Here's how it works: Clutch Engagement: When the clutch pedal is released, the clutch discs are pressed between the flywheel and the pressure plate. The pressure plate applies force on the stack of friction discs, clamping them together. Friction Generation: The multiple friction discs provide a larger frictional surface area. This allows for higher torque transmission capabilities compared to a single plate clutch. The friction generated between the discs and the flywheel enables power transfer from the engine to the transmission. Clutch Disengagement: When the clutch pedal is depressed, the release mechanism withdraws the pressure on the pressure plate. This action separates the friction discs from the flywheel, breaking the contact and disengaging the clutch. As a result, power transmission is interrupted, and the vehicle can change gears or come to a stop. Multi-plate clutches offer higher torque capacity, improved heat dissipation, and increased durability compared to single plate clutches.
