On the 4th Thrusday of each month, Venture Cafe St Louis' EdHub Expert-in-Residence hosts the “Education at the Intersection of Equity and Innovation” series sponsored by The Regional Business Council. In 2015 Elon Musk tapped Joshua Dahn to disrupt the way we teach our children, and as a result, how they learn. Musk asked Dahn if he would be interested in starting a small school at the SpaceX campus in Los Angeles for his children and those of his employees. Dahn agreed, and from this, Ad Astra (“to the stars” in Latin) was born, an innovative school sitting in the shadow of the SpaceX rocket factory. One of the two main components of the school: no grades or age segregation and a focus on problem-solving rather than learning to use tools. Today, Joshua Dahn leads a spinoff school Astra Nova, an experimental school in Los Angeles, California serving kind, imaginative, and academically motivated students. Moreover, Dahn knew that these types of experiences were limited to those that could afford to attend the school, so he and co-creator Chrisman Frank took things to the next level with Synthesis, a new education platform they founded to make this form of education available to the whole world.
