Using a Mycelium Grow-It-Yourself Kit Sanitize everything: your hands, the work area, and any tools or materials you'll use. If you've purchased an already grown material, thoroughly break it up until no white mycelium chunks are visible. If you need to grow your material, add distilled water and flour into the bag as per the instructions provided by the kit provider. Incubate until fully myceliated (typically 7–21 days, but refer to your specific kit instructions). ** Note on Field Capacity: When you squeeze the substrate, it should feel moist but only drop a few drops of water. Adjust moisture by adding water or drying slightly as needed. Making a Sculptable Mycelium Material with Gellants Mix the mycelium starter with the substrate, then add one or more of the following: Flour: 10–20% of substrate weight for structure Xanthan Gum: 0.5–1% for gel consistency Psyllium Husk: 5–15%; provides a gel-like consistency Flaxseed Gel: Boil flax seeds in water until a gel forms, strain, and mix in at 5–15% Other Natural Gums (like guar gum or locust bean): 0.5–2%, depending on desired texture Mix thoroughly until the consistency resembles dough or clay, and sculpt as desired. Placement for Incubation: Smaller pieces: Place in clean Tupperware containers Make small holes in lid/sides for air exchange Cover holes with micropore tape to block contaminants Larger pieces: Place on a clean tray Cover with a clean box or clear plastic bag Maintain humidity with light air exchange (poke small holes if using a bag) Incubate in a warm, dark place, keeping the material moist but not wet.
