Welcome to the Trade Network. Tonight we follow Pytheas of Massalia — the Greek explorer who sailed beyond the Pillars of Heracles and reached the edge of the known world. Around 325–320 BCE, Pytheas left Massalia (modern Marseille) and journeyed north along the Atlantic coasts of Gaul and Iberia, crossed to Britain, and continued toward the mysterious land he called Thule, where the summer sun barely set and the sea turned thick like a congealed mass. His book On the Ocean (Περὶ τοῦ Ὠκεανοῦ) is lost. But fragments survive in: Strabo Diodorus Siculus Pliny the Elder Cosmas Indicopleustes “When he had reached the remotest parts of the north the barbarous people found there showed him the cradle of the sun.” — Cosmas Indicopleustes Tonight we examine: • The tin trade (καττίτερος) • The amber routes (ἤλεκτρον) • Britain as Prettanikē • The island of Iktin • The tidal transport system • The overland Rhône corridor • Basileia — the amber island • The Cassiterides • And the Massaliote network that made it all possible Book Preorder Link: https://buymeacoffee.com/AuldBoy/e/43... 🎙️ New to streaming or looking to level up?
