Professional Clinician Jeff Davis answers: I purchased a 3-year-old mare that has not wanted to back out of the trailer since I got her. We have done a fair amount of trailering and she had been great with loading, but I have only made her back out twice. The last time I made her back out, it was a big fight, and she ended up slipping while stepping out of the trailer. When I went to load her again, I had issues getting her into the trailer, and she was anxious to turn around as quickly as possible so she wouldn’t have to back out of the trailer. I don’t want to make the habit worse and I’m wondering what you would recommend? We have done a lot of backing up around the yard, both on the ground and in the saddle. She was very insecure about backing down a hill at first, but she has gotten fairly good at that.
