Why PLA Isn’t a “Beginner” Filament

PLA is often treated like a starter filament. Something you use early on… then move past. But what if that assumption is wrong? In this video, we put various PLAs through real-world strength testing... not lab tabs, no charts, and not pseudo-science. We 3D printed large tow-ring style parts, mounted them to an engine hoist, measured force with a crane scale, and pulled until failure. We tested standard PLA alongside modified PLA variants designed for toughness, flexibility, and heat resistance, and the results surprised us. What we found is that the very thing people criticize about PLA — its brittleness — is often what allows it to hold massive amounts of tension before failing. Once additives are introduced to change PLA’s behavior, that raw strength can be reduced depending on the use case. This video isn’t about saying PLA is perfect. PLA has real limitations with heat and long-term load holding. But it is about correcting the idea that PLA is weak, disposable, or something you automatically outgrow. This is real-world testing, done at full scale, to show what these materials actually do when pushed hard.
