(14 Sep 1995) English/Nat The Dalai Lama Wednesday had a low-key meeting with the president and vice-president of the United States, designed to avoid increasing tensions between the US and China. The Tibet's spiritual leader-in-exile said strengthened US-Sino relations would allow Washington to better influence Chinese policies, possibly including those governing China's occupation of Tibet. In his last public appearance of his 10-day tour of the US, the exiled leader spoke mostly of spiritual matters, but also of the ongoing struggle for freedom from Chinese rule. Throughout his American visit, the Dalai Lama has received a warm welcome from crowds eager to hear his message of peace. The Dalai Lama implored his American audience to join his struggle to free Tibet. SOUNDBITE: "We are passing through a very, very difficult period. We need, very much, your help." SUPER CAPTION: Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader The Dalai Lama warned that Tibet, which has been under Chinese occupation since 1959, is in danger of having its spiritual culture wiped out. SOUNDBITE: "I consider it my immediate responsibility to save this culture. The danger of threat of extinction does not come from within Tibet, but come from alien power. Therefore, in order to save Tibetan Buddhist culture, we have to find a political solution.
