Five of us set off from Llandudno West Shore to paddle around the Great Orme. We thought that we might go further according to the conditions. At the start it was calm but as we rounded the first headland we headed into a breeze from the north. This was actually the easterly wind wrapping around the huge lump of rock that is the Great Orme. On rounding the north west corner there was a pleasant surprise of early seabirds on the cliffs and feeding in the nearby water. After paddling into the spectacular open caverns of the cliffs we headed on to the north eastern corner where a playful seal joined us for a while. The decision then was to continue on to the Lifeboat station for the lunch stop. One of the kayaks decided to launch itself before the owner was ready :-) After lunch we set off for Little Ormes Head so we could get a good downwind run across the bay back to the Great Orme. On leaving the wind shadow of the Little Orme there was sufficient breeze to launch the sail. There followed a super long stretch of paddle sailing which continued all the way along the north of the Great Orme and for some distance along the western end as the wind wrapped its way round the cliffs. Then we were in the wind shadow and enjoyed the calm, the afternoon sun and the views over to Puffin Island and Anglesey. A most enjoyable day’s paddling with fellow members of the Macclesfield Canoe club.
