For example, after receiving guidance and support, they might feel better temporarily but relapse after a few days. Why does this happen? Master Lu: Do you ever experience this yourself? Many people do. That’s how depression works. Even without clinical depression, don’t you sometimes feel like you understand things one moment but not the next? (Caller: Yes.) It’s like feeling hungry one moment and full the next. Life is like that—our emotions fluctuate. When emotions dip, the brain can exhibit depressive symptoms. Prolonged low moods, withdrawing from groups, and internal imbalances in the body’s systems all indicate the need for constant adjustment. Let me give you a simple analogy: imagine a car with a damaged wheel. You still have to drive it. While turning corners, it might feel smoother, but on straight roads, it wobbles. You just have to keep adjusting as you go. It’s the same with depression or any illness—it won’t heal in a day or two. (Caller: That’s true. We often encounter these situations. Is the root cause unresolved karmic debts or spirits that haven’t been liberated?) From a metaphysical perspective, it’s unresolved karmic debts. From a clinical perspective, it’s an overly stressful lifestyle. (Caller: Too much pressure.) Exactly. Depression develops in cycles. At times, their emotions spiral out of control due to immense pressure. After they release that pressure, they gradually readjust. This is why some people become reclusive, introverted, or overly sensitive. (Caller: Yes, many people keep everything bottled up inside and don’t express it.) Exactly. Bottling things up causes emotional harm. To alleviate symptoms, they need counselling to help them express their feelings. Once they do, their condition lightens. Reducing their negative emotional burden and making them feel supported is key. Do you understand? (Caller: I understand.) If their condition is severe, they may also need medication. (Caller: For fellow practitioners with depression, should we focus on showing them more care and encouragement? Sometimes their negative emotions can be overwhelming.) If you have depression yourself, avoid trying to help others with it. Their negativity could heavily influence you. Depression often leads to long-term negative thinking, characterised by pessimism, self-blame, low self-esteem, and despair. People with depression often feel hopeless and believe others look down on them. (Caller: Yes, we should study psychology more deeply.) Exactly. Emotions fluctuate throughout the day—some people become irritable before bed, others feel depressed in the morning, while some feel low after a bad night’s sleep. Poor sleep can cause mood swings, irritability, and the belief that life is meaningless. Over time, as the body’s nervous system deteriorates, they may lose their appetite, experience weight loss, and reduced desires, or even develop health issues like gynaecological or male-related problems. Essentially, this is a dysfunction of the autonomic system. (Caller: So the mind influences the body, doesn’t it?) Yes, it’s psychological. A person’s emotions control their entire being. (Caller: That’s true. Learning Buddhism and cultivating the mind are so important.) Exactly. Dedicate yourself to practising properly. 10am-8pm About Master Lu: https://richardjunhonglu.org/ About Guan Yin Citta: http://guanyincitta.com/en/ / masterlubuddhism
