Closing the virtual keyboard in Fallout 4 on the Steam Deck, after the Next Gen update on the 25th of April 2024, causes the game to crash when it's opened manually as of this video. This is frustrating since you might've had to work around that by using an external keyboard to use in-game console commands. I've found a quick fix that you must do every time you play Fallout 4 on the Steam Deck! Just open the Mods menu before loading your save, Search and close it. Now it shouldn't crash until the next time you play and must do this again. If other features open the Keyboard automatically, it should also help. Enjoy until a real fix comes along! This should also work by doing anything that automatically opens the Virtual Keyboard, such as trying to rename a weapon at a Weapons Workbench (which is also currently broken...) The Virtual Keyboard doesn't automatically appear while searching if you use the “SteamDeck=0 %command%” (without quotes) Launch Option. So you will need to remove the launch option for this to work. Note, if you start a New game with the launch option mentioned above, the game will also crash when you close the keyboard when naming your character, so make sure not to use the Launch Option when creating a new game.
