Did you know there are 26 bones in the feet, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles! Small muscles between the joints and larger muscles that go into the lower leg. Hence why foot mechanics and movement are so important! Let's work on our foot mechanics together, try moving through each of the below suggestions 5x through: Start by massaging between the toes up towards the ankle until you start to feel bone. Releasing the muscles in the feet will help start the process to be able to spread your toes and use the strong muscles of the feet. With your feet flat, try spreading the toes away from one another (without flexing them). Commonly the toes may not move initially, but with time and practice, you will be able to spread your toes! Next, flex and point the feet curling through the toes as far as you can into the foot, then lengthening and flexing all the way through (think of it as cat-cow for your feet). Next, let's mobilize the big toe: using your hand grip the big toe and pull it towards and away from you, even adding a bit of traction away from the body. Keep your foot flat and use muscles to get the big toe to move on its own through flexion and extension. Finally, walking bare feet in the grass or sand is so important for proper foot mechanics, to reconnect with nature and ground yourself. Now get outside and work on those foot mechanics :) Any questions or comments please send them to [email protected]. See you next in Stratford & Toronto (Ontario, Canada).
