It’s surprising how often such artefacts fly directly in the face of prevailing trends from the relevant time period; and so it proves with Time Wasters, originally issued in a run of less than 200 copies by the Sticky imprint in 1978. Time Wasters themselves were an informal collective of music students who met at Ingestre Hall, a residential arts centre near Stafford, under the tutorship of Greg Holt. Encouraging them to compose their own material, Holt recorded the results – unadorned live performances, essentially – directly on to two tape recorders. In a year during which the skinny tie and straight-leg trouser held cultural sway, Holt’s charges would appear, on this evidence, to have been neither stirred nor shaken by punk’s seismic upheaval, far less its more personable, chart-friendly younger sibling, new wave. It’s a determinedly low-key affair, in which politely harmonised, folk-tinged acoustic balladry predominates and a brace of sax and/or flute-led instrumentals make up the numbers.
