It has been 56 years since the first military coup in modern day Turkey took place: “Dear citizens! As of midnight last night, Turkish armed forces have taken over administration throughout the entire country.” Then Colonel Alparslan Turkes announcing the coup on the radio. In the hours before dawn on May 27th, 1960, the Turkish army announced it had toppled the government. Prime Minister Adnan Menderes was taken into custody in Kutahya and brought to the capital, Ankara, where members of his cabinet were. Since then there have been 3 more military coups, the last one taking place in 1997.
