Praise God! Indwelling of the Father and The Son (19-24). Jesus will be alive in the Father. The world won’t see Him but we will- because He lives, we live. He is in me. I am in Him. Obeying Him is proof, a response of, love for Him. Putting in that context makes obeying, or the idea of it even, easier to understand. Jesus secured our resurrection life- our eternal life- because He lives, so will I. full and perfect knowledge of divine things will never be attained by believers until the second advent. Our Lord says, “At that day,” the day of my coming, “ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in Me, and I in you.”- Ryle, tbh this is a comfort now that I know how stupid I actually am. I say this not out of desperation but as a statement of fact. Even after conversion we see through a glass darkly, and on no point do we see so dimly as on the nature of our own union with Christ and of the union of Christ and the Father. Ryle When we love Him we keep His word… The Gift of His Peace (25-31). The Holy Spirit will help us. He teaches us and helps us remember. It is the Holy Spirit that brings Jesus to life for me when I read His word- so I remember. It is the Holy Spirit that helps me understand when I read His Word. Jesus was going back to the Father- If the apostles loved Him they would rejoice. This is exciting and something to look forward to- even for us. That is something right there. He told them in advance so they would believe and be comforted… that this is Truth- that HE is truth. Faith in the blood of Christ must always be attended by loving obedience to the will of Christ. What the Master has joined together, the disciple must not put asunder. Do we profess to love Christ? Then let us show it by our lives. The Apostle who said, “Thou knowest that I love Thee!” received the charge, “Feed my lambs.” That meant, “Do something. Be useful – follow my example” (John 21:17).- ryle Father appears 22 times in this chapter. - His unity with the Father. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world gives, give I unto you.” Jesus’ legacy. The world has never given me peace. In fact, I think that is why I struggle accepting Jesus’ peace. Peace of any kind is foreign to me. I hate it and WANT that peace Jesus gives to us. Even though the devil is intent on his last attack- Jesus tells them, and us, that the devil has NOTHING on Him. And when we have Him the devil has nothing on us. The devil will never win even if it feels like sometimes he does. With us- the devil tries and often wins battles… but Jesus wins the war. He WON the war. When we face the devil this way- we win the war. The peace of this world is often based on distraction or deliberate blindness and lies. Jesus offers a better peace, a real peace.- Guzik “In the Bible the word for peace, shalom, never means simply the absence of trouble. It means everything which makes for our highest good. The peace which the world offers us is the peace of escape, the peace which comes from the avoidance of trouble and from refusing to face things.” (Barclay) With faith in God and His Son, with the receiving of His Spirit and His peace, we can have an untroubled heart in a quite troubled life.- Guzik “Jesus goes to death not crushed by the machinations of Satan, ‘but that the world may know that I love the Father and as the Father has commanded me.’” (Dods) It was time to leave the upper room and face destiny. For all of them. #DailyBibleVerse #BibleReading #GospelReading
