These three excerpts played by the Lake Highlands High School Symphonic Band (Dallas, TX) under the direction of the legendary late Eddie Green, were performed at a concert at the University of North Texas in Denton in the spring of 1971. They include "Scheherazade" (4th Mvt., The Sea and The Shipwreck portions) by Rimsky-Korsakov, and "Manzoni Requiem" by Guiseppe Verdi. One of the first great musical influences in my life was playing the trumpet in the Lake Highlands Jr. High and High School Bands. Mr. Green brought a philosophy to his jr. high and high school bands never before attempted--to bring a pure, symphonic sound to his band programs. He did this partly by requiring every student in the Symphonic Band to take private lessons, mostly from Dallas Symphony players. Every student in this particular 1971 band had a role in one or both of the Jr. High and High School Symphonic Bands winning the highly coveted Honor Band of the state of Texas, rewarded by playing the Honor Band concert at TMEA the following year in San Antonio. Put on your headset, crank it up, and enjoy (of course I had to include some of the best brass sections)!
