A visible and palpable mass is clearly present in the peritoneal cavity as a result of malignant metastasis. Malignant neoplasms invade surrounding tissues. Cells from the neoplasm penetrate into the area around, this is termed direct invasion; a previously healthy tissue is ‘invaded’ by malignant cells. This also means that there is local growth in the size of the tumour. Another defining characteristic of malignancy is that neoplastic cells spread and generate secondary growths in other parts of the body in the process termed metastasis. Malignant tumours may have areas which do not have an adequate blood supply which can result in areas of necrosis. Also rapidly grown new blood vessels may rupture, resulting in haemorrhage. As malignant cells metastasize, and overall tumour mass increases, the condition will eventually be fatal.
