The Inspiring Drama Teacher Zoom Meeting 21st May 2024

We discussed drama games to play with teenage students, which would also help them to practise English. The games included "Prepositions", "Ships in the Fog", "Giving Directions", "What Are You Doing?", "Who Likes", "Person to Person" and "Where Do you Stand?". Other games and variations were also submitted and discussed by participants. The Zoom Meeting is part of the Inspiring Drama Teacher online course/resource, a subscription site and Facebook group where we share ideas and resources. We currently have a discounted offer on this course, which includes live sessions, downloadable lesson plans and lots more - here: https://dramaresource.com/inspiring-d... Click timings to jump though the video. 05:31 Activity idea for teaching prepositions: Show a picture with lots of action and ask students to choose an object/person/animal and describe its location using prepositions. 07:20 Game for giving directions: "Ships in the Fog" - Students work in pairs, one blindfolded. The other uses secret sounds (e.g., beeps) to guide their partner through obstacles. 15:13 Adding complexity to "Ships in the Fog" game: Instead of just moving through obstacles, give students tasks like collecting a letter from the post office. 16:33 Alternative game using remote control: Students pretend to control robots with a remote control, giving each other instructions on body movements. 18:25 Adapting "What Are You Doing?" for beginners: Use pictures of food or have students mime simple actions related to food. 19:57 Game "What Are You Doing?" Students take turns miming actions and lying about what they are doing. 21:18 Adding emotions to "What Are You Doing?" - The person asking "What are you doing?" includes an emotion in their question (e.g., surprised, angry). 23:08 Adapting "What Are You Doing?" for beginners: Play the game with students acting out the truth before introducing lying and emotions. 27:18 Adapting "What Are You Doing?" for pairs: Good for students with strong language skills who can think quickly. 29:09 Game "Who Likes..." Students stand in a circle and try to steal each other's seats by saying things like "Anyone who likes ice cream." Students who like the named thing must move and the person in the middle tries to take a seat. 30:18 Making "Who Likes..." more complex: Introduce different language structures besides "likes" such as "has been to France" or "is allergic to". 31:37 Rule for "Who Likes...": The person in the middle must tell the truth in their statements. 32:31 Safety precaution for "Who Likes...": Playing without chairs avoids bumping and knocking chairs over. 34:04 Alternative game "Raise Your Hand" for beginners: Students raise hands and say a word corresponding to a statement from the teacher (e.g., "Raise your hand if you like cookies"). 35:53 Game "Person to Person": is a good game for learning body parts: Requires physical activity and students must touch each other's body parts according to the instructions. 37:44 Safety consideration for "Person to Person": Make sure everyone is comfortable being touched. 40:51 Game "Where Do You Stand": Students stand at opposite ends of a space marked "agree" and "disagree" based on their opinion of a statement read by the teacher (e.g., "I prefer cats to dogs"). 41:48 Variation of "Where Do You Stand" for advanced learners: Ask students to explain why they chose their position. 42:23 Adapting "Where Do You Stand" for social sciences: Use statements related to social issues (e.g., "It's okay to take a friend's pen without asking"). 43:43 Variation of "Where Do You Stand" for discussion: Students discuss their reasoning for their position with a neighbor after the statement is read. 44:08 Adapting "Where Do You Stand" for environmental issues: Use statements related to environmental topics (e.g., "We should save water"). 44:53 Adapting "Where Do You Stand" for storytelling: Assign students characters in a story and have them agree or disagree with statements based on their character's perspective. 46:14 Adapting "Where Do You Stand" for literature: Use characters from classic stories, films, or novels that students are familiar with. 47:20 Adapting "Where Do You Stand" for reviewing text comprehension: Create statements based on factual information from a reading passage and have students agree or disagree. 47:49 Adapting "Where Do You Stand" for formative assessment: Use the game to assess how well students understand a character or concept. 48:30 Alternative way to play "Where Do You Stand": Use the call-and-response phrases "Pizza" (agree) and "Pasta" (disagree) instead of moving to different areas. 49:10 Game "Name Game": Students mingle in a space, shake hands, and introduce themselves, but must remember the last name they said and use it to introduce themselves to the next person. The game ends when someone introduces themselves using their own name.
