In the 1940s, the women of the Ellen Melville Pioneer Women’s Hall committee set about collecting records of early Pākehā women settlers in the Auckland region. These details, such as their first and maiden names, were often lost to the colonial record due to the social standards of the time which assigned a woman’s identity to their fathers or husbands. In this film, family history and research librarians Seonaid Harvey and Abigail Ennor share collections used for tracing family history with a focus on re-discovering foremothers and early settlers.
