Live long and prosper 🖖, today I'm going to show you how to make a twisted bokeh effect. No Petzval or Helios lenses. Easy processing in Affinity Photo. It will not be a perfect and ideal effect, but a simple procedure that adds a bit of an artistic flair to the photo. Remember to comment and let me know what do You think. 00:00 Intro 00:25 Photo examples and overview 00:35 Examples and where to find them 01:33 Twisted bokeh - example #1 02:18 Masking 03:50 Adding blur 04:20 Done ! 04:30 Where to get twisted bokeh lens ? 05:20 Twisted swirly bokeh - example #2 06:46 Twisted swirly bokeh - example #3 08:27 Twisted swirly bokeh - example #4 09:40 Twisted swirly bokeh - example #5 11:47 Swirly bokeh BEFORE & AFTER - showcase all examples 🎨 Where to get it? Lensbaby swirly lens: https://amzn.to/2RMNCs9 Lensbaby Trio: https://amzn.to/2TpikIt Lensbabt Twist 60 https://amzn.to/3yE3rSt www.lomography.com for Lomo lenses Helios lens - search on ebay and 99% someone sells it used locally. 🎨 In the original optic effect, the circles of light (circles of confusion - bokeh effect) would be rather egg-shaped, narrower, slimmer and curved. With the conversion we just gently blur the entire background using circle as a base for the blur direction. There is a difference. We will use the radial filter affinity photo provides. Also it does add a bit of an "Orton effect" to the whole image. Especially old vintage lens like to make highlights 'bloom' a bit creating a halo around them. Orton Effect in Affinity Photo : • 🎨 ORTON EFFECT @ Affinity Photo - 4 exampl... 🎨 While masking, instead of manipulating the refine parameters, you could go ahead and create filters and create a mask with a circular gradient. The most important thing is that the sharp part of the image and the blurry backgorund should be seemless 🎨 Lenses which can produce the twisted swirly bokeh effect : Petzval (Lomography) Helios lens like 58mm and 88 and others Lensbaby 🎨 The effect works better at full frame, the edge of the optics is where the effect is the strongest. With smaller sensors these parts of the lens are not used. 🎨 The swirly bokeh effect is in every lens, just not visible. The most important thing is to photograph as close as possible to our subject and that there are many light sources in the background. Aperture works best around F2 :) Helios lens are very old, try to find some in a decent condition. In soviet russia they didn` know about quality assurance someevery lens can be a bit different with lighter or stronger effect. Try Your luck :) But the swirly or twisted bokeh effect is always there. We use radial filter affinity photo provides but there is a lot more 'blur' tools that we can use. All in the end provides a similar result. The twisted bokeh effect is nicely merged with the origina sharp imageto make a realistic effect of the swirl, twirl, twist, whatever You will call it :) One photo is from https://unsplash.com/@tree1234, rest are mine. Likes, subs and comments hepl me out a lot.
