Webinar: Between the Nickel Boom and the Palm Oil Curse

The global race for so-called ‘critical raw materials’ is increasingly shaping European trade and industrial policy. Trade agreements continue to be seen as a key instrument for the EU to secure access to raw materials outside Europe. Accordingly, the planned EU-Indonesia trade agreement, which is expected to be concluded in 2026, is high on the political agenda. However, the agreement raises serious questions: The potential impact on the environment, human rights and political scope for action in Indonesia remains largely unaddressed. In our new information brochure ‘Travel Guide: Between Nickel Boom and Palm Oil Curse’, we take a critical look at the background and risks of the agreement. In the webinar Alessa Hartman (Powershift) and Theresa Kofler (Anders Handeln) present the publication together with Hadi Purnama from the Legal Centre for International Trade and Investment and discuss the trade policy, raw materials policy and human rights implications of the EU-Indonesia agreement.
