Unless you want to see what you're oven looks like after a potato has exploded inside of it, be sure to vent your potato in this way. 2. Oil your potatoes. Many people forget this step, but it really makes the difference in taste and presentation. Using a food brush, baste the potato skin in olive oil or use olive oil spray until they're glistening. The oil keeps the potato from drying out too much; the skin will turn out crispy while the inside will stay nice and tender. 3. Salt and pepper your potatoes. These basic seasonings not only provide flavor but also keep the spud from drying out too much; sea salt works best. Use a few pinches of salt to cover the entire potato -- not too much salt!! -- and your potatoes will turn out fluffy as well as tasty. Adding other seasonings can put a nice twist on a tasty yet typical potato. It's up to you what seasonings you want to use; a few herbs can make the potato flavor either really pop or blend well with other foods that you're serving. 4. Wrap the potato inside light weight aluminum foil and place in the center of the oven. 5. Bake potatoes for 45-60 minutes. Use a knife or a toothpick to check that your potato is completely cooked. A totally cooked potato will be tender and offer no resistance to a gently inserted knife or toothpick. If you potato is not done, keep it in the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes and check again. Is baking a potato easy? Yes. Do you have to be stuck inside the kitchen the whole time? Once they're in the oven, no. Go outside, read a book, enjoy your pre-potato time, but don't forget that you have food in the oven. Potatoes left to their own devices will over-bake, and an overdone potato is both dry and supremely unappetizing. Remove potatoes from the oven once they're done and serve. Potatoes are best served fresh from the oven if you plan to add soft toppings like cheese because the cheese will melt over the hot potato.
