The film outlines the purposes and goals of the X-15 hypersonic aircraft research program with particular emphasis on the role that the International Business Machine (IBM) 701 computer played in the recording and analysis of the data collected. The North American X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft operated by the United States Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as part of the X-plane series of experimental aircraft. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in aircraft and spacecraft design. In the film, live footage is shown of the X-15 hypersonic aircraft being launched from the U.S Airforce Boeing B-52 Mothership aircraft as well as footage of engineers working in the control flight monitoring rooms collecting data. The film was presented by IBM with the North American Aviation Company, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the United States Airforce. ‘X-15 Man Into Space’ was produced by Spotlite News. 00:10 A U.S. Airforce Boeing B-52 Mothership, or Balls 8, coming down the runway with an X-15 Hypersonic aircraft under its wing at the Edwards Airforce Base in California 00:38 Boeing B-52 Mothership in the sky with the movie title: ‘X-15 Into Space’ 1:08 Illustration of a map of California with Edwards Air Force Base marked on it with a dot and a circle drawn around the top corner of the Nevada/Utah border 1:17 Moving illustration of the flight path of the X-15 1:34 A Man entering the a National Aeronautics and Space Administration building 1:38 A women operating an International Business Machine (IBM) Computer 1:46 An Electronic Data Processing Machine IBM 701 computer 1:50 Men standing with binoculars by tracking antennas 1:57 View of the X-15 attached to the B-52 Mothership in the air 2:23 Employees in the Edwards Airforce Base master control flight monitoring room tracking the altitude of the Balls 8 aircraft 2:48 Employees in the control flight monitoring room listening to the pilot’s reports through the radio 2:57 The X-15 aircraft being dropped from the B-52 Mothership 3:13 illustration of the X-15 Aircraft with the points of measurement listed: dynamic pressures, rate of acceleration, engine feed and fuel pressures, motion of the rudder 3:38 view of the meters in the flight satefy control room reflecting critical flight factors 3:52 illustration of the X-15 travelling at supersonic speed 4:13 Data from the flight of the X-15 being recorded with radar monitoring tools 4:30 Illustration of the X-15 flying in space above earth 4:45 radar monitoring tools measuring the flight path of the X-15 4:50 Illustration of the X-15 re-entering the earth’s atmosphere 5:06 illustration of the ‘metal skin’ on the X-15 glowing due to its high temperature 5:12 Employee monitoring the recording of measurements from the X-15 5:20 Employee checking the meters which are monitoring the safety of the pilot in the X-15 5:41 Illustration of the dry lake at Edwards Air Force Base and a X-15 zooming past the screen then circling 5:47 Live footage of the X-15 landing in the dry lake 6:19 The pilot being greeted and inspected by others after landing 6:27 Employees working in the Air Force’s reduction center at Edwards Air Force Base 6:29 A man working with a machine that is translating the flight’s data into computer language information 6:49 The punch card programme with the X-15’s flight data on it 6:55 The recorded answers being fed into a printer 7:00 Engineers standing around the printer and inspecting the information 7:15 Engineers reading and pointing to a line within the printed information 7:22 illustration of earth with the flight path of the X-15 7:31 Production credits Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction.
