Hernias are classified according to the location of hernia. The severe form of hernia is not dependent on the location of hernia. But the complications it can come up with any part of the hernia. So the classification based on the severity of the hernia we classify it as the reducible hernia and irreducible hernia. The irreducible hernia can get obstructed to the lumen of the intestine. So we call it as obstructed hernia. This obstructed can get strangulated because when they lose blood supply with venous drainage also being blocked we call it strangulated hernia. So obstructed and strangulated hernia are very complex and complicated hernias. The irreducible hernia is the state where we have to consider immediate surgery and hernias are reducible we need not consider emergency surgery. So when the hernias are strangulated hernias, that is when they become more complex and complicated hernias where we might have to wait for sometime after opening. If the blood supply just resumes, we don’t have to cut the intestines., but if the blood supply resumes, we have to cut, divide and anastomose the intestines, that is when the hernias get complicated.
