Kandy is a place you don't want to miss to experience the essence of Sri Lanka. ▶︎ More Sri Lanka videos:    • Sri Lanka   Colombo may be Sri Lanka’s largest and most significant city politically and economically, but no city in this island nation is more culturally, historically or religiously important than Kandy. It was from here that Sinhalese kingdoms reigned for centuries before the first Europeans (the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch and British) showed up in Sri Lanka in the 1500s. And it was here that the Sinhalese monarchy—which maintained control of much of the island even as colonizers occupied its coasts—finally fell to the British in 1818. Kandy remains a place like no other to appreciate the essence of Sri Lanka. It’s a beautiful city, whose older quarter encircles postcard-like Kandy Lake, built in the early 19th-century as a great public works project of the last Sinhalese kingdom. One can visit as I did the former royal palace (now a museum) and the Temple of the Tooth, one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. I’m staying with a family in a wonderful homestay near the Mahaweli River, a bit “out of town” from city's core—and loving it. The heart of the city is just a short tuk-tuk ride away.
