Before Christ, women were commonly thought of as property and for a woman to be unfaithful was punishable by death, but . . . The man could marry multiple women. Why did they ask about marriage? Marriage has been defined multiple ways by society and they wanted to make him unpopular try to get him to go against the law. In society, the term marriage is used to define a separated unit. It is a term that implies what God says happens when “two become one.” What is the purpose of marriage? Is it strictly a declaration of love? Does it imply commitment? If it implies commitment, commitment to what? If two become one, is marriage divisible? What causes marriage to become divisible? Mark and Matthew present Jesus’ teaching on marriage and we see some slight differences that should be addressed. Matthew records the question with this clarifier - “for just any reason.” Mark reports the conversation without it. Matthew reports the phrase “except for sexual immorality” whereas Mark does not include the clarifier. Both say that you should not separate what God has joined together, meaning that in Matthew the couple has not yet legally become married, yet by Jewish engagement they are considered married. Why would the culture make a difference? The Jewish culture did not break engagements and the Gentiles did. The only reason the Jews waited was for the groom to go and prepare. The meaning was much more poignant when Jesus said “except for sexual immorality.” Our Lord’s statement conveyed the seriousness and importance of faithfulness in marriage. ” Excerpt From 22506045 Truths about Marriage Matthew 19.3-12 Michael Felber
