From there, I return and explore Mt Cook Village — starting at the Sir Edmund Hillary statue, walking past the Hermitage Hotel, Mt Cook Visitor Centre, and soaking in views of Mt Sefton and Aoraki/Mt Cook on a crisp, clear winter day. 🥾 Popular Hiking Tracks in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park: Hooker Valley Track: A 10km return walk (partially open now this winter), famous for swing bridges, alpine boardwalks, and glacier views ending at Hooker Lake. Kea Point Track: A 2.7km return track offering an easy walk through alpine scrub to a lookout facing Mueller Glacier and Mt Sefton. Tasman Glacier View Track: A short uphill walk to panoramic views of Tasman Glacier, NZ’s longest glacier, and its terminal lake. Only 1 hour drive from Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook alpine village sits amongst sky-scraping peaks, phenomenal glaciers, permanent snow and all beneath a stunning star-studded sky. The village is at the base of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook. According to Ngāi Tahu legend, Aoraki and his three brothers were the sons of Rakinui, the Sky Father. While on a sea voyage, their canoe overturned on a reef. When the brothers climbed on top of their canoe, the freezing south wind turned them to stone. The canoe became the South Island (Te Waka o Aoraki); Aoraki and his brothers became the peaks of the Southern Alps. Although Aoraki Mount Cook encompasses 23 peaks over 3000 metres high, it is very accessible. State Highway 80 leads to Aoraki/Mt Cook Village which is situated beside scenic Lake Pukaki and provides a comfortable base for alpine activities.
