#nyc #nychistory #NYCarchives #surveillance #archives Public Artist-in-Residence (PAIR), Kameron Neal, and audiovisual archivist, Chris Nicols discuss Neal’s upcoming exhibition, Down the Barrel (of a Lens). Neal uses archival footage from the NYC Municipal Archives' NYPD surveillance films collection. In the 1960s and 70s, the NYPD’s Bureau of Special Services and Investigations (BOSSI) conducted covert surveillance on political activists, public figures, and community events. Civil Rights protests, Vietnam War demonstrations, labor strikes, and cultural parades were frequently surveilled. The 16mm silent films were digitized in 2019 and the collection is publicly available online, offering unique perspectives from this transformative period in New York City's history. Hear Neal’s first impressions while exploring the collection and how he developed his new ambitious project opening in the Brooklyn Army Terminal over Juneteenth weekend.
