Thrustmaster's New Direct Drive Technology is Kind of a Big Deal... T598 Review

A while back, Thrustmaster reached out to me asking if I would like to review their brand new budget friendly direct drive bundle for Playstation & PC, the T598. Of course I accepted, and they followed through. With this bundle, Thrustmaster just gave Fanatec a huge problem. At $500 for a 5nm constant 10nm peak torque direct axial drive wheelbase, wheel rim, and 2 adjustable pedals, this officially makes the T598 the most affordable direct drive option for PlayStation 4 and 5. The most notable part about this kit is the wheelbase. It is using a different type of motor called an axial flux motor. Traditional direct drive wheelbases uses radial flux. With axial flux, compared to radial flux, you get better peak torque, more accurate feedback, higher frequency vibrations, zero cogging and significantly less parasitic loss. All while using less materials to manufacture, most notably a significant reduction in the use of copper, which allows the manufacturing costs to be much lower, therefore making the price much lower as well.
