TV's Saturday Morning Cartoon Legacy: The Flintstones (Winston ad)

We'll be spending this summer with a retrospective look back at the cartoon classics from the 1960s... today, a second look at Hanna-Barbera and their classic take on The Honeymooners: The Flintstones. The Flintstones was television's first 'adult cartoon', and the first successful cartoon on primetime television. Produced by Joseph Hanna and William Barbera, the show premiered on ABC on September 30, 1960 on Friday nights. The show ran on ABC at various times for six seasons, ending its run on April 1, 1966. However, the series had a long life in syndcation, as well as being rebroadcast on NBC 1967 to 1970. There was a very strong relationship between the advertising community and broadcast television in the 1950s and 1960s. The two were almost one in the same, and that may have worked okay for programming for adults, but that was not always the case for children. A cartoon sponsored by a cigarette company in 1960 may not have seemed that odd, but after 1964 (and the US Surgeon General's report on tobacco and cancer), it became problematic. This cartoon clip from the early 1960s did not seem out of place at that time; however, just as few years later, and things had begun to change dramatically. There is another outstanding book on Hanna Barbera that we highly recommend fans check out (in our prior Flintstone clip, we highlighted Bill Hanna's book) - My Life in 'Toons: From Flatbush to Bedrock in Under a Century – May 1, 1994 By Joe Barbera copyright 1994 Enjoy! This video clip is presented here on YouTube for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended. Up next... a visit with The Jetsons!
