Shannon Mercer: soprano Stephen Clarke: piano Keegan Boulineau: surtitles Children's songs have provided source material for several of my works including From the Cradle to the Grave (1998) for 16 solo strings, Uta (2000) for solo viola and orchestra, ...with silver bells and cockle shells... (2018) for soprano and orchestra, and most recently, ...among the cinders... (2024) for soprano and piano. The simplicity of these songs' melodic and formal design make them amenable to many types of reimagining (just as their lyrics allow for multiple, sometimes subversive, interpretations). In London's Burning (2021), fifteen different children's songs provide the melodic and lyric content for a succession of short ditties which present as a quasi-continuous whole lasting approximately fifteen minutes. Although the contrasts from one piece to the next are sometimes significant, the absence of transitions or long breaks obliges the listener to navigate a rapidly changing, emotionally complex narrative.
