Wet and Wild is a juvenile male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was reported lying on the ground in a city business and apartment area. With the (non) help of google navigation, and a directionally challenged MOP (member of public), I spent a fruitless 20 minutes wading through the virgin (just formed) creeks, waterways and waterfalls of Pyrmont in the pissing rain, becoming drenched to my underwear in the process; little Wet and Wild was also completely drenched, lying on his back in a puddle in the rain. It would have been so simple if the MOP had said - outside the atrium between the radio and TV station in Saunders St (and I would have known exactly where the bat was, since he would be the third bat I've rescued in that area), but it became far more complicated than this of course. Sydney is in the grips of a La Niña weather pattern, which involves a lot of rain. Lots and lots of rain. Sydney isn't great in the rain since it's not something we have to deal with often, with low points and poorly drained areas flooding and causing all sorts of traffic chaos. In care, Wet and Wild (named for the weather of late), was clearly hugely unwell with a significant head injury. He didn't just ring his bell, he also was bleeding into his skull. I never know if I should give the little ones a chance or euthanase them early; the thing is - young brains heal far better than old brains, and have greater neuroplasticity (brain recovery ability), to form new connections to reroute around injured areas, so babies and juvies are more likely to heal from a brain injury, and be able to be released. But this didn't happen with Wet and Wild, who died overnight. I didn't really expect him to survive, but I really hoped. I gave him analgesia and trusted that he'd make his own decision on survival. RIP little Wet and Wild.
