Karla Brundage, founder of the West Oakland to West Africa Poetry Exchange, joins Martha Cinader for the Listen & Be Hour podcast/radio show. They discuss her journey of self-discovery and cultural connection. She shares her experiences traveling to Africa, launching poetry exchanges, and ultimately returning to Hawaii to establish a healing retreat for writers. The retreat, Writers Across Oceans, will focus on nature, quiet, and writing practice, exploring the relationship between creativity and connection with the land. The conversation also touches on Karla's involvement in the Sammy Young Jr. Legacy Committee and the creation of a healing circle in Tuskegee under remarkable circumstances. Her recently published book, Blood Lies, Race Traitor is inspired by the same historical event as Memoir of a Race Traitor by Mab Segrest, daughter of the man who murdered Sammy Young Jr. The two came together in Tuskegee for a remarkable event. But that's not all! Karla also talks about her involvement in the electronic Journal, Tar Baby, published with the support of the Toni Morrison foundation.
