Syria remains a focal point in discussions on geopolitics in Middle East, as well as regarding Turkey. One main reason is the Kurds. Lately, there has been four main topics in the developing story: SDF commander Mazloum Abdi and Rojava’s de-facto "foreign minister” Ilham Ahmed joined the Munich Security Conference, and held talks, among others, with US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. There have been reports that the U.S.A plans to gradually leave its military posts in Syria, hand the territorial control over to Damascus Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, has mentioned Iraq as “next” after what was seen as “strategic gains” in Syria As part of the developments, and despite the critique and divisions of opinion, Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM Party seems intent on advancing the so-called “Terror-Free Turkey” project in synch with Ankara’s plans. I sat down with Sinem Adar, a leading expert on Syria, Turkewy and the Eastern Mediterranean, Head of the Centre for Applied Turkey Studies (CATS) at the SWP think tank in Berlin, to have an overview of the dazzling series of events in the past month and assessments for the near future.
