A Queensland bushranger – ‘The Wild Scotchman.’ There were many sides to James McPherson. Known also as ‘The Wild Scotchman,’ and ‘Alpin McPherson,’ he began his Queensland bushranging career in violent fashion towards Richard Willis in March 1864, where he: “feloniously did make an assault, and put him in bodily fear of his life; and three cabbage tree hats, two pairs of riding pants, one pair of boots, one gun, one crimean shirt, one bottle of whisky, and fourteen pounds of flour … did steal, take, and carry away. “ Whilst held on a boat for the upcoming trial, he wriggled out of the handcuffs and escaped, heading towards Gayndah. From November 1865 he went on a spree, robbing 6 mail coaches and 4 individuals. Despite this, he was known during mail robberies to considerately fold up personal letters that contained no money and return them to their envelopes, was polite and ‘always kept his word.’ His humour was shown when he posted useless cheques amounting to £1700 back to His Excellency Sir George Bowen. He was finally captured on the 30th March 1866. --- Escape Attempt St Helena 12 April 1870 Report attempt at escape and recapture of six prisoners at St Helena.
