Global trade cannot exist without an efficient shipping industry. As the backbone of the world's economy, nearly 90 percent of global trade is seaborne. According to the World Shipping Council, Shanghai ranks as number one in the top fifty global container ports, being the largest exporter of goods moving on container services. Altogether, 16 Chinese ports make it to the top 50 list. Among the top 10, seven are from China. The Port of Dalian, in northeastern China's Liaoning Province, boasts of one of the five-biggest ports in the country. The port saw throughput of 467 million tons of cargo (up 2.8 percent), and it processed 9.7 million containers (up 0.6 percent) last year.
