Instead of a café, offices, a theatre in the places where apartment buildings used to stand, and even a swimming pool on Old Town Square. These are the most surprising transformations of Prague. The New Stage of the National Theatre The unique building of the New Stage on Národní třída replaced a number of original apartment buildings in 1968. At one time, the building had more critics than admirers among Prague residents, but today it simply belongs to the “Národní” somehow. DRN House It was not so long ago that cars were parked on the site of the multifunctional DRN house by architect Stanislav Fiala. Today, there are luxury offices, a courtyard with renowned restaurants, and a roof garden. Children's Book House (Albatros) Until 1949, the Baroque Brauner House stood in Perštýn, which housed the famous Union café. In 1969, the Albatros publishing house built the Children's Book House here. Today, there are offices here with one of the most beautiful views of Prague in the city. Máj Department Store There are not many witnesses to the original Šlik Palace, which was demolished in 1937. It was replaced by a temporary wooden structure, which was damaged by fire and was completely removed together with the surrounding apartment buildings in 1969. Then, a showcase of socialism, the OD Máj, was built here. It has undergone a significant transformation recently – we dedicated our own video to it: • Nový Máj – co se skrývá uvnitř? Quadrio Right next to Mája is the Qadrio department store, but it wasn’t that long ago that there was only a low metro exit building and refreshment stands. Before the metro you would find three apartment buildings. Malostranská metro station Until 1974, where the metro station is today, there was an exhibition pavilion on Malostranská Street, built shortly after World War II. Old Town Square One of Prague's most iconic squares looked completely different in the late 1970s. Next to the Jan Hus monument was a fire station built during World War II to extinguish fires after air raids. Emmaus Abbey The original church of Emmaus Abbey suffered serious damage at the end of World War II, during an air raid by Allied aircraft that mistook Prague for Dresden. The towers were replaced by a unique concrete facade with gold tips. In fact, the building that now houses the Dancing House was also demolished during the same air raid. If you want to know more about it, watch the video: • Tančící dům, který stojí díky Havlovi... Wenceslas Square It is no surprise that "Wenceslas Square" has also undergone changes. For example, on the corner with Opletalová Street, there was the U Trnků building and next to it the torso of Akciová tiskárna, which was replaced a few years ago by a building called Flow Building, which, in addition to offices, also houses Primark. Transgas buildings The brutalist buildings of Transgas also went down only recently. In their place, a house by architect Jakub Cígler should be built here under the leadership of PSN and Penta, which should include shops, restaurants, offices, but also 200 apartments. Rudé právo headquarters The monstrous building near Masaryk Station was demolished in 2012, just 23 years after it was built. The empty building was bought and demolished by Penta, which built the Florentinum office complex in its place. Incidentally, Penta is also involved in the planned transformation of Florence. What's coming up, you can find out in the video: • Proměna Florence – místo autobusáku l... Which of the transformations surprised you the most? And which one do you think we forgot?
