(1 Dec 1994) Nat/Sot Taslima Nasreen, the Bangladeshi writer who's under a death threat, is in Paris to meet the French President. During talks lasting 20 minutes, he said he respected her work. Taslima Nasreen came to the Elysee Palace in Paris to meet President Francois Mitterrand. The feminist writer is threatened with death in her home country of Bangladesh by Islamic Fundamentalists. They've condemned her books as pornographic and anti-Islamic. Inside the Palace, she spent 20 minutes discussing the situation in Bangladesh with Mitterrand. The president told her he respected her work. However, Nasreen made no comment as she left the meeting. Security has been tight during her ten-day trip to France. She fled to Sweden in August following the threats on her life, and says she plans to visit Spain, Switzerland and Austria. Her trial date in Bangladesh has been set for December 10. She faces charges that she "outraged the religious feelings" and "insulted" Muslims in Bangladesh. She says she is prepared to return home if the government can guarantee her safety.
