Six months ago, the Hungarian Parliament passed a bill that moved the University of Theatre and Film Arts (SZFE) from the state to a foundation. The Ministry appointed a Board of Trustees who signed the foundational documents, seizing all assets belonging to the university. Those documents deprived the university’s senate of all of its essential rights of self-governance, including the right to elect the rector. Therefore, the senate disbanded itself on the 31st of August. On the same night the students of the university blockaded the building as a protest. Though the epidemic forced us out of the building, the protest is still ongoing. Ours wasn’t the country’s first university taken over in this manner: we fight for the freedom of the entire higher education system in Hungary. We received a tremendous amount of support from abroad. Now, when the values of academic freedom and autonomy is at risk in Austria, we want you to know: we are with you. Science, culture, education: these concepts are abstract and their outcomes take time to appear. It is easy to dismiss the threats to them, and it is hard to argue for them in a paradigm that focuses on immediate results. Nonetheless, they are the basis of credible and versatile information, literacy, and free speech. They are fundamental values regardless of the cultural circumstances. Therefore, we should adhere to these concepts. The democratic process, our self-governance is not restricted to the election of our leaders. It is not only our right, but our duty to monitor their actions. What you are doing now is not only enforcing your interests, but maintaining the democratic order. And we are with you.
